With 34 hard fought categories having the winners announced on the night, there was much friendly competition between guests representing the country’s finest wedding businesses and services.

Over 28,000 brides and grooms nationwide voted for their top suppliers and venues in a wide range of categories, who were then judged by a panel of expert industry specialists, with decisions based on quality of work and a real wedding experience.

“The annual WeddingsOnline.ie Awards have been enormously important in recognising the successes, dedication and extremely high levels of quality and service given by the Irish wedding industry,” said Peter Bryans, MD of WeddingsOnline.ie Ltd., speaking after the awards ceremony. “The standards keep improving year on year. From bouquets to bridal wear, music to makeup, castles to cakes, the many award-winning wedding suppliers throughout the Irish wedding industry can be extremely proud of their achievements.”

We are thrilled to be recognised in this way by the very many brides and grooms who took time to vote in the WeddingsOnline.ie Awards.

The Good Guys have become one of the most popular wedding bands in Ireland, filling dance floors nationwide. They are a no-nonsense, dedicated and professional band playing an energetic and lively 3 hours of music. Having consistently received glowing reports from happy Brides and Grooms, we felt it would be interesting to chat to the band members and find out what sets them apart from the other wedding bands in Ireland today. In this interview, the band discuss their own musical background, their unique sound, and current trends in wedding music.

What’s the musical background of the members of The Good Guys?

To cater for every client and the varying musical tastes of their guests it is highly beneficial to have an eclectic serving of musical backgrounds in a group. ‘The Good Guys’ successfully combines the mixed talents of its individual members to deliver a sensational show packed with variety. Some are classically trained, some have performed extensively in jazz and big band and some have cut their teeth on the Irish rhythm and blues scene. All of the members have worked in the corporate sector with some of the largest and best known party bands in the country. Outside of the wedding entertainment sector, individually ‘The Good Guys’ work in media production (TV & radio), songwriting and studio performance.

What would you say is the goal of The Good Guys, what do you hope you can do for people?

The goal of ‘The Good Guys’ is to provide each and every client with a truly memorable, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable wedding reception. By providing numerous services (reception music, band and DJ), each to the highest possible standard we are a one stop shop for all of a couple’s wedding entertainment needs. Simply by booking ‘The Good Guys’ every couple and their guests will be guaranteed a highly entertaining and unforgettable experience. Every client can have as much or as little input into the night’s entertainment as they wish and thanks to the competence and professionalism of our booking coordinator all of our clients can be assured that every request will be listened to.

How would you describe your sound?

‘The Good Guys’ are a band with distinctive quality combining professional musicianship, faithful arrangements and a world class high fidelity PA system. The band’s extensive experience helps to deliver a completely live super tight and super sharp show that is both impressive and entertaining in equal measures.

How do you help the bride and groom choose their music?

Our vast repertoire is a concentration of some of the best party music ever written. We have carefully selected songs that are tried and tested and that aim to please the majority of guests at a wedding reception. The couple can handpick songs from our extensive list or they can let the band call the shots on the night. It’s entirely dependent on each bride and groom. Either way, the couples and their guests cannot fail to enjoy the wide selection of music played by ‘The Good Guys’. In addition, ‘The Good Guys’ will learn the first dance song, if required, and perform it live on the night!

What other criteria do you use to plan your sets?

We carefully examine all of the details for every couple – venue, number of guests, special requests, etc. and select a set list that we feel will be most suited to enhancing the ambiance on the night. As the band is completely live we are also in a position to make a set change on the spot if we notice that a particular style of music isn’t working. The attention to detail is one of the main reasons that ‘The Good Guys’ manage to keep a dance floor full all night long.

Have you noticed any trends with regard to the tunes people ask for?

Most people want to enjoy themselves as much as they can and therefore there are a number of songs that crop up on the special request lists frequently. More often than not these songs are already in our extensive repertoire. In addition to the obvious party selections, we frequently travel to different parts of the country and may be asked on occasion to perform some old time waltzes or perhaps a quickstep medley. From time to time we might be asked to perform a ‘Siege of Ennis’ or ‘Paul Jones’ style dance to encourage people on to the floor.

Some clients request swing and big band music due largely to a resurgence in the popularity of this music through the likes of Michael Buble, Westlife and Rod Stewart.
Luckily none of these trends pose a problem for ‘The Good Guys’. We’re comfortable playing practically any style of music.

At each stage, what mood do you hope to create for the wedding party?

We strive to exude as much positive energy as we can and try and lift the mood of any reception – easing the guests in gently with the first dance or two and then taking it up a gear as we hit party mode. We like to think of our show as being high energy and exhilarating. More often than not, guests can’t stop dancing because they simply don’t want to – they enjoy themselves so much!

Within the sometimes rigid wedding format, how do you put your unique stamp on your set?

We use clever arrangements and innovative segues to link seemingly incompatible genres and provide a seamless program of music for the whole night. As the goal is to keep people dancing, there is hardly any gap in the music. We successfully transition from pop to jazz, rock to reggae, country to waltzes and everything in between without any jarring transitions. The continuity is one of the most talked about aspects of our band from a client’s perspective.

How do you ease the bride and groom’s nerves regarding the first dance?

First of all we offer them choice. They can have any song they wish – either played live by the band or the original recording can be played in high fidelity sound through our state of the art DJ system. They can select any style of song they desire – slow or fast, ballad, swing, indie, pop, rock, reggae, waltz – we’ve played them all! Usually couples have a fairly set idea on what they would like but from time to time, some couples get overwhelmed with the choice of songs available to them. We usually offer helpful advice to steer them in their preferred direction. All they need to do is fill out the booking form in advance of their reception and the rest is taken care of.

Obviously your music is great, but what other tricks do you use to fill the dancefloor?

Our main objective is to deliver great music all night long. We try to avoid long winded time killers or overly cheesy audience interactions. That being said, we encourage the guests to have dance-offs, play air guitar, impersonate Michael Jackson or Mick Jagger. Occasionally we are requested to perform audience participation sets which we do from time to time. We rarely need to resort to ‘tricks’ because the music is so good!

How do you balance your own unique style with the need to please your audience?

The primary aim of ‘The Good Guys’ is to satisfy each and every client and their guests. We don’t allow our personal taste or feelings about music interfere with our ultimate objective. It’s all about client satisfaction. At the same time, we do feel we have a better idea about what will actually work with an audience as opposed what a client wants to hear all night long so we will provide constructive advice on how to ensure that their guests will experience something truly unforgettable and enjoyable.

How do you hope people will feel by the end of the night?

We hope that everyone feels truly entertained, happy and satisfied at the end of the night. We hope that the couples and their guests will leave the venue with enduring memories of one of the best nights they’ve ever had content with the knowledge that they chose the right band for their reception.
